Alice Dowling is a Graduate Healthcare Planner at Essentia
Q – Why did you decide to join Essentia Trading?
A – Having previously worked in an NHS laboratory and discovering laboratory work did not suit me, I was keen to find an organisation where I could remain within the healthcare industry. Essentia offered me the opportunity to work across multiple national and international projects within both the public and private sector and more recently with Higher Education providers, working hard to provide a better future for healthcare.
Q – What is the best thing about your role?
A – Both the variety of the work we carry out and the work life balance make Essentia a great place to work. Working across multiple healthcare projects is inspiring and I am consistently challenged. We have a great location within London which provides the perfect opportunity for impromptu social activities such as trips to the pub or team lunches.
Q – How would you describe the culture at Essentia?
A – Work hard, Play hard.
Q – What have you learned since you’ve joined Essentia Trading?
A- I have learnt a great deal, ranging from master-planning, developing schedules of accommodation and clinical and functional briefs through to carrying out space utilisation space utilisation surveys. No two days are the same and you learn something new every day.
Q – What do you find inspiring about the work you do?
A – The most inspiring aspect of my work is working within a team who come from such varied backgrounds and approach projects with different areas of expertise. I have learnt so much from my colleagues and will continue to do so. We are all equally driven to develop world class healthcare that will serve future generations.
Q – How long have you worked for Essentia Trading, and what has been your proudest achievement to date?
A – I joined Essentia in May 2017 and since then my proudest achievement has been leading a recent space utilisation survey and writing the final report which received very positive feedback from both my colleagues and the client.
Q – What are your favourite projects that you have worked on?
A – One of the first projects I was involved with was the design of a new hospital. This involved the development of briefs as well as attending design team meetings with the architect which gave me a great insight into every detail that goes into the design process. I also thoroughly enjoyed working on a recent Masterplanning project; confirming the current estate and capacity and developing strategic options to achieve the client’s aims and objectives.
Q – What do you think makes Essentia Trading unique?
A – There are several companies who carry out similar work, however Essentia is unique because as a subsidiary of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust it is part of a large and successful national health service Trust, giving it a unique platform on both the national and international healthcare markets. The profits made through Essentia Trading are reinvested back into the NHS, helping to contribute to the sustainability of our health service.
Q – What has been your favourite Essentia Trading social event?
A – Every social event has been a lot of fun so it’s hard to pick one. My top three are a team-bonding weekend away in the Lake District, a day out watching the Double Header Rugby at Twickenham and cruising down the Thames on the Thames Rib Experience followed by dinner and drinks.
Q – What has surprised you most about the team/your role?
A – The Healthcare Planning team have such a diverse range of backgrounds that integrate to deliver often complex solutions on a large range of projects. Each project is so different and the ability of the team to adapt appropriately to deliver every project successfully is inspiring.
Q – What advice would you give to anyone considering joining Essentia?
A – If you have a keen interest in healthcare and have a willingness to learn and take every opportunity that comes your way, then apply. Even if you haven’t studied a science related degree, you will be able to pick up a magnitude of skills from the Essentia team.
