Jason Pereira is a Surveyor in the Property team at Essentia

Q – Why did you decide to join Essentia Trading?

A – I interviewed four weeks after graduation. The process mostly came about by chance, but I learned about Essentia quickly. I had just finished my masters, had work experience in healthcare and applied online. The company was new, the website was new, and I got on board early

Q – What is the best thing about your role?

As a surveyor on the property consultancy team, my role involves valuation, development, planning, leasehold work and anything else relating to commercial and residential property. The best part is the variety of work. It sounds cliché, but no two days are the same. You never know what will land on your desk

Q – How would you describe the culture at Essentia?

A – Relaxed and professional. There’s a small company ethos here and it’s helpful being able to know everybody.

Q – What do you find inspiring about the work you do?

A – The outputs are physical. This line of work offers tangible results because you get to see what’s been accomplished, whether it’s a new building or office space. These spaces are occupied and it’s rewarding to see people operating within them.

Q – How long have you worked for Essentia Trading, and what has been your proudest achievement to date?

A – I joined in December 2014 when there were only about a dozen employees. It’s been interesting to watch the company grow to where it is today.

Q – How have you been supported during your career development?

A – I received external training for the APC and internal mentoring leading up to the exam. Our Property Director, Stephen Edgar mentored us and went out of his way to make sure we were supported during the whole process.

Q – What are your favourite projects that you have worked on?

Working with Greenwich CCG to find a new office in Woolwich. It was an end to end project that we worked to find potential properties, short list those properties, and project manage the transition to a successful move in. Being involved in every step along the way made it memorable.

Q – What do you think makes Essentia Trading unique?

A – Being owned by a NHS Trust and working alongside the Trust gives Essentia a completely unique dynamic. I don’t know any other company that runs under this model

Q – Are you involved with any charities or do any volunteer work?

I’m involved with a career mentor programme at the University of Aberdeen. Students are matched with alumni who work in the same industry they’d like to pursue a career in. As a student I had the opportunity to get mentored by a director of planning and regeneration. It was useful for me and I try to give that back. I’m on my third mentee helping with CV’s, applying for jobs and anything else I can aid in.

Q – Do you have any other interests outside of work?

A – I’m a major sports nut. I’ll watch football, tennis, basketball, boxing or anything that’s on.

Q – If you could have dinner with any three people who would they be and why?

A – George Orwell would be invited because I’ve read quite a few of his books and he led an interesting life. Elon Musk has been doing some amazing things with his work in SpaceX and the future of driverless cars. He’s a visionary. And lastly, Muhammed Ali. He was a great personality and would have no shortage of words.
