Essentia showed real leadership in the field of driving sustainable travel, and have helped us deliver a robust and leading plan that will serve us well with future planning needs. They had the resource and energy to deliver this project in a short time-scale and we are very pleased with the number of people who took part in the survey and with the practicality of the recommendations. Essentia helped us visualise our results and this work will inspire important conversations about travel considerations for our future estate.”
Phil Wisson, Associate Director of Estates and Facilities, Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust
The Trust needed a sustainable travel plan as part of its ongoing estate development and asked Essentia’s award-winning sustainability team to help after seeing the robust plan that Essentia had developed for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Our unique approach
Essentia’s sustainability team understood that C&I’s main objective was to engage staff and understand travel patterns, as well as staff awareness of physical activity benefits and flexible working policies available.
While working with the Trust, Essentia identified wider sustainability issues that could be tackled simultaneously. These included the availability of healthy food during work hours, particularly for those staff working through the night, and whether the Trust could improve its support for flexible working.
These were incorporated into a survey sent out to over 1,400 staff developed by Essentia complemented by an internal communications strategy to maximise staff engagement with the survey.
Nearly 30% of staff responded to the survey, which Essentia analysed to produce a Trust-wide travel plan for C&I. Among the recommendations was a need to establish a wider sustainable development management plan, to work closely with other organisations such as Transport for London and to improve facilities to enable staff to actively commute to work.
