Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) is one of London’s leading Trusts and, like many NHS providers, is facing a significant financial challenge. As part of a comprehensive review, the Trust recognised the need to reduce the costs associated with its estate and identified this work as ‘The Fixed Cost Challenge’.
Essentia Trading was commissioned by the Trust to undertake a Healthcare Planning Diagnostic Review to identify the potential opportunities and focus areas for the Trust to achieve its multimillion pound Fixed Cost Challenge target.
Our unique approach
The focus of the Fixed Cost Challenge was on how the Trust uses its assets across multiple sites. The objective was to identify where the Trust could either reduce fixed costs by releasing assets or utilise them more efficiently to increase income.
Our team used their analytical capabilities and in-depth knowledge of health estates to carry out a rapid review of the opportunities available to the Trust to release occupied space through applying healthcare planning benchmarks and space utilisation principles.
We successfully identified a range of opportunities, which would enable the Trust to achieve its Fixed Cost Challenge target, and also provide potential opportunities for future years to come. These opportunities were a mix of productivity improvements and space optimisation across the sites without restricting the Trust’s future ambitions for growth.
