Essentia Framework Enables Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to Advance its Energy Saving Ambitions

Essentia’s leading energy performance contracting (EPC) framework has played a central role in the appointment of global resource management company, Veolia-Cynergin, for a £3m energy saving project for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Trust is seeking to lower carbon emissions and reduce its energy costs across three sites –  Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre as part of its longer-term sustainable healthcare plans.

Veolia-Cynergin was appointed through Essentia’s award-winning energy performance contracting (EPC) framework. Over three months, the Essentia team project-managed the whole EPC process, working closely with the Worcester estates team to find the right supplier, support them through the contract agreement stages and ensure that the Trust achieved value for money.

Veolia-Cynergin will deliver a wide range of energy efficiency measures including combined heat and power capacity, boiler replacement, conversion to low temperature hot water from steam and a low energy lighting retrofit. The work should deliver fuel savings alone of £660,000 a year, whilst carbon emissions will be reduced by 33 per cent a year.

Essentia’s EPC framework was launched in 2014 and enables public sector organisations to deliver large-scale cost and carbon savings with guaranteed returns on investment. Since then, the framework has delivered over £18m of energy savings and worked with 19 NHS Trusts, 27 Acute Hospitals and over 30 community-based sites.

Alexandra Hammond, Associate Director, Sustainability at Essentia, said: “The major benefit of using the Essentia framework is that it takes away the complexity of energy saving procurement and provides a fast route to market. Through straightforward and practical contracts, we’ve simplified the process for both client and supplier, meaning that agreements can be signed quicker and work can begin immediately, expediting savings for the organisation.”

Ray Cochrane, Head of Estates at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, adds: “Essentia has a huge amount of experience in helping Trusts fast track large-scale CO2 and energy savings projects and deliver best value for money. They have been instrumental in advising us on the process, supporting us through contract negotiations, ultimately helping us to find the right partner to progress this project.”
