Joining up patient care to improve efficiency

Essentia Technology is working hard to make digital healthcare a reality within Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and in the community. We want to improve patient care and efficiency by providing new digital solutions together with a robust, secure infrastructure that can offer, remote access, fast electronic data, reliable storage and retrieval and a paper-light environment.

One of these new solutions is the Local Care Record (LCR) which gives clinicians instant and secure access to patient information.

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals at Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts and local GP practices can now view each other’s patient records quickly and securely through the Local Care Record. This system allows them to see important information about a patient at the touch of a button before making any decisions about their treatment. As at the end of April 2016 all 91 GP practices were successfully connected to the 3 King’s Health Partners (KHP) NHS Acute Trusts in Southwark and Lambeth. This translates to over 1000 primary care and 1900 acute users).

The Local Care Record was developed with partner organisations as part of Southwark and Lambeth Integrated Care (SLIC), and is a great example of integrated working. It is managed and hosted by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Gary McAllister, Chief Technology Office for Essentia Technology says;

“Throughout the life of the LCR programme GSTT has provided the architectural, technical, software development and governance expertise to manage the complex delivery to primary care in Southwark and Lambeth. At each stage of the programme the LCR has been developed with full collaboration with our partners and citizens in Southwark and Lambeth.”

This is just one example of how Essentia Technology is responding to clinical needs; others projects include the creation of small bespoke systems as well as larger project/programmes such as the development of e-Noting in inpatients and outpatients, inpatient medications management and chemotherapy ePrescribing across South London.
